Making it "Scratchy"

Something I'm big on is food. I love to cook, I love to eat, I love to see others eat what I cook. It's really pretty simple for me. Food makes everyone happy. It's something we partake in whenever we go to social gatherings. So why is food not the entire answer? I make the food I cook at home from scratch. It tastes better and it's better for us. So why does that not seem like the answer to life's problems?

Because nothing else is "scratchy" in my house. I buy whatever we need rather than make it or improvise. I spend so much time and money on junk! Even when there is no money to spend I find myself going to the mall and calling that "fun." Yup, it's sure fun to collect a bunch of crap you don't need while your kids scream in the stroller right? No, it isn't. It really isn't.

This morning I was talking to my fiance about how I think we should do everything from scratch. He agreed, because he was probably thinking about food. But I meant everything. Buy the necessities and make do with what we have otherwise. Simplify our lives like the people who live in the tiny houses (have you seen those?! they're fascinating!) I wonder how much money we would save if I just did things on a much smaller scale. If I tried to do things more the way my grandmother did than if I tried to do them the "convenient" and modern way (and seriously, a $500 electric bill in winter is NOT convenient.) There's nothing wrong with washing dishes by hand or hanging clothes on the line. And maybe even getting rid of the cable we just got. We really don't watch it.

So here's my challenge:  To simplify. That's it, I want it simple.
